Blepharoplasty: Overview and Surgical Procedure

What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic and functional procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. This surgery addresses sagging skin, puffiness, excess fat, and muscle laxity around the eyes, resulting in a youthful, refreshed, and more alert look.
Common Cosmetic and Functional Concerns
- Sagging or drooping upper eyelids causing folds or eyelid hooding.
- Puffiness or bags under the eyes due to fat accumulation.
- Excess skin on the lower eyelids leading to wrinkles and bags.
- Loose or hanging lower eyelid skin exposing the white of the eye.
- Impaired peripheral vision from extreme upper eyelid sagging.
- Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyelids causing aged appearance.
Blepharoplasty Surgical Procedure
- Anesthesia: Performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia based on the case and patient preference.
- Upper Eyelid Surgery:
An incision is made in the natural fold of the upper eyelid, allowing removal or repositioning of excess fat and removal of redundant skin and muscle. This results in a smooth, well-defined upper eyelid crease with concealed scars. - Lower Eyelid Surgery:
Incisions are made just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach). Excess skin is removed, and fat pads are either removed or repositioned to reduce puffiness and smooth under-eye hollows without visible scars when performed inside the eyelid. - Closing Incisions:
Surgical incisions are closed with sutures or skin glue, with sutures typically removed after about one week. - Adjunct Procedures:
Laser resurfacing or chemical peels may be used to improve skin texture and reduce discoloration.
Recovery and Results
- Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common and usually subside within 1-2 weeks.
- Most patients return to normal activities in about 7 to 10 days, with final results becoming apparent as swelling resolves.
- The procedure can improve vision obstructed by heavy eyelids and rejuvenate the overall facial appearance.
Summary
Blepharoplasty is a widely performed cosmetic and functional surgery that rejuvenates the eyes by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the eyelids. The procedure is tailored to patient needs and provides long-lasting improvements in appearance and visual function.
