Lung Transplantation (LT)

Lung Transplantation (LT): Overview
Definition:
Lung transplantation is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or failing lung with a healthy lung, usually from a deceased donor. It is a treatment option for end-stage respiratory failure when other treatments have not worked.
Conditions That May Require a Lung Transplant:
Lung transplantation is reserved for individuals with serious lung problems that can’t be improved with any other treatment and who have a limited life expectancy without a transplant. Common conditions include severe cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary hypertension.
Procedure:
During a lung transplant, a single or pair of lungs are removed from a donor and given to a recipient. The surgeon makes an incision in the chest to remove the damaged lung, and the donor lung is then connected to the airway and blood vessels. For some transplants, a heart-lung bypass machine may be needed to circulate blood during the procedure.
Benefits:
Lung transplantation has become an increasingly acceptable treatment option for end-stage lung disease, improving quality of life and offering survival benefits. Though only about 50% of patients are living 5 years later, it can lead to good survival outcomes and quality of life.
